I’ve never not drawn.

Getting up early for Saturday morning TV to draw with some old guy on a dock in Maine, who mainly showed how to draw dinosaurs, was the highlight of my week. I would pick up the “How to Draw Star Wars Characters” books from the Public Library as often as I could, not realizing I was learning the basics of comics art, using cylinders and boxes to shape form.

Then I found comic books, with the earliest comics being picked up being John Byrne’s Man of Steel, Ron Lim’s Silver Surfer (given to me by my brother Aaron), Todd McFarlane’s Spiderman, and the original run of Mirage Studio’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was hooked from the start and quickly grew to expand, buying as many comics as I could by working the neighborhood to mow lawns and whatever other way I could think of for this poor kid to ride their bike 3 miles to Dover Cards and Comics to pick up the massive pull stack I put in with the shop.

Life’s ups and downs have pulled me in and out of the comics, and I chose to start a family and I needed to make actual money, so I worked hard and left the comics behind for a long while. Getting back in strong, after several years, gave me exposure and the ability to work on amazing projects. I was the Editorial Cartoonist for the Baystate Banner Newspaper out of Boston from 2007 through 2023. I was able to work on the production art and comic adaption of the Award Winning Rock Opera, The Gay Bride of Frankenstein. I’ve been able to work on projects with awesome talents like Rich Woodall and Dana Black. To say nothing of the original run of Dig Up Her Bones with Severed Head Comics and my work in the Anthology Title Severed Head Presents.

I haven’t put out a new comics title since 2014, until now, due to the failing health of my disabled spouse, and other massive issues that didn’t allow me to focus, not with my time or with my mental attention. After she passed in 2021, and I dealt with my own pressing issues I had no choice to ignore, I am finally in a place where I can create again.

After having an exhibit at the Player’s Ring in Portsmouth, NH in October 2023, and being able to create pieces that allowed me to express myself in new and exciting ways, I am revisiting my story, Dig Up Her Bones. I first chose to pick up where I left off but given the sporadic nature of my art journey when I first started it in 2009, and a new outlook on life, I am restarting it, adding a much-needed prologue and have rewritten and tweaked it from the start. I am excited for people to get their hands on this book, which I plan to run for 16 issues, over the course of 4 years.

Thank you to everyone that has been there for me over the years, especially those that are still with me after the last 3, which was a hell of a transitionary period.

Thank you to anyone who has visited my site, ever bought my art or just stopped and said hi at a show.

Thank you to Ayla Posey. For everything.

Off to go draw until my hand cramps,

Katie Drew
